Having spent over 35 years working in our other business G. T. Harvey and Partners, I have over that time seen many, many patients both children and adults, who have had issues with learning and especially reading.
Many have hugely benefitted from spectacles, eye exercises, coloured overlays or specifically designed tinted lenses and helping these people has been some of the most rewarding work I have done in my professional career.
My interest and passion for this area of Optometry started shortly after I qualified having attended a lecture by Prof. Bruce Evans. In this lecture he discussed patients with specific visual issues, which caused them reading problems. Many of the issues discussed I could identify with, which is probably why I didn’t read a complete book until I was 13!
Sports Vison is my other passion. I was one of the first practitioners in the country to undertake a post graduate qualification in Sports Vision at Manchester University and have assessed a wide range of Sportsmen and Women including an International Lacrosse goalkeeper, a GB International fencer, a cage fighter ranked in the World top ten and a National equestrian rider.
I am also the only UK Optometrist who is a member of the International Sports Vision Association.
Working with and helping these athletes is both fascinating and rewarding professionally.
In my spare time I compete – I have to admit very slowly! – in triathlons.
People spend a huge amount of time and money on their chosen sport; training, equipment, nutrition and coaching but do they think of whether or not their eyes are holding them back?
Jenny has been involved with ‘eyes’ since her childhood days, being the daughter of an Optometrist, she thought it was the norm!
Jenny has a First-Class Honours degree in Optometry, from Glasgow Caledonian University and as soon as she qualified, Jenny under took extra training in the field of Eyes and Reading Difficulties, to the extent that she has very quickly amassed an excellent knowledge base.
Jenny is studying for a Masters in Clinical Ophthalmology and is also completing a qualification to independently prescribe Ophthalmic Drugs.
Over the last 7 years Jenny has performed numerous assessments helping both adults and children with reading issues.
When not working you will often find Jenny on the hockey pitch, which helps fuel her interest in the role that vision plays in Sport.
Maria is a wife, mother, organiser, ‘fixer’ and the glue which keeps both the Hub and the Henderson household organised and together!
The chances are she will be your first point of contact with the Hub. While not an Optometrist Maria has been exposed to ‘Eye Speak’ – as she calls it – for over 30 years so a lot of knowledge has rubbed off. Her special interest is helping children to learn and enjoy reading. When not working or walking the dogs she will have her nose in a good book!
Matt, Leo and Willow
Our son Matt is a barrister in London where he lives with his wife Miriam, but he hates eyes! So…. You won’t see him!
Leo and Willow, our 2 Italian Spinoni dogs are the canine element of the family and keep us sane and in touch with the world outside of eyes!
They sometimes hang out in the Hub so they don’t get lonely at home. Willow is a Princess and loves everyone. Leo is a Mr Grumpy, but is a real softy at heart. Both love tummy rubs!
So that’s the Hub team. We all look forward to meeting you!
